These Netflix Tricks Changed How I Watch TV and Movies

id=”article-body” class=”row ” section=”article-body” data-component=”trackCWV”>

Though you may have figured out how to  on , there’s no need to stop tinkering with the platform. As one of the , Netflix is always bringing in hit  and originals like and . And you can make your streaming experience even better by fine-tuning your subtitles, audio, video quality and more.

Whether you’re a Netflix power user or a streaming service newbie, you probably don’t know all its secrets. There’s a way to and have fun with , but you can use some more obscure features, too. You may find creating a watchlist straightforward, as well as scrolling through the  or personal recommendation sections. But Netflix has other ways to peek behind the curtain and enhance your viewing experience. With a flick of the wrist — or a remote — you can up your streaming game using these tips.

Love Netflix Originals? Search for them directly

Tired of googling “Netflix show with monsters”? Take your browsing skills to new heights by digging for Netflix originals with one search term: “Netflix.” Open the Netflix app and pop the brand’s name in the search bar and it will bring up every original Netflix and series ever released.

Take it a step further to locate Netflix’s interactive specials. Go beyond Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and pull up all the platform’s programming where you can decide what happens in the next scene. Type “interactive” in the search box and this set of Netflix originals will appear, including the titles for kids.

You can use this same method to find content that runs in 4K or HDR. Type in either term and Netflix’s search results will return titles that display in that format. Keep in mind that there is a limited amount of Netflix content that displays in 4K or HDR.

Use hidden codes to access content

By now, you may have heard talk of hidden codes for subcategories in Netflix, much like Starbucks’ secret menu. These exist. Narrow down your hunt for titles in a specific genre by using four-digit codes when viewing in a web browser.

With so much to sort through, this trick can help you easily , action and adventure, sports movies, musicals and more with the right code. Check  on where to find the type of movies you’re looking for.

Control your video on a keyboard

Do you tend to watch Netflix on a computer? If you do, you may rely on a mouse to pause, rewind or control the volume. But there are keyboard shortcuts for that. Toggle the volume with the up and down arrow keys and hit the left and right arrows to fast-forward or rewind by 10 seconds. Hit M to mute the sound.

To pause your stream, use the spacebar; hit it again to unfreeze your video. Rather than click the full-screen icon to widen your view, simply tap F on your keyboard. To exit full screen, use the Escape key. Boom.

Adjust your data usage

I know plenty of people who love to watch Netflix on their mobile phones or tablets. For those with limited data, that can eat up a big chunk, depending on the video quality. However, you can tinker with the data usage to lower the amount for your device.

Open the Netflix app on your phone and tap the More icon or your profile. Click on App Settings and navigate to Video Playback to select Cellular Data Usage. Per Netflix’s , change your download setup to Wi-Fi Only to avoid draining your mobile plan’s data. Note that this will only pop up if your device operates with cellular data.

You can also change your Netflix data usage settings from your web browser for all your screens, including mobile. Open your profile on your account page and click Playback Settings. There are four options: Auto (the default), Low (up to 0.3GB per hour), Medium (up to 0.7GB per hour) and High — the best for HD — which uses 3GB an hour for HD streams and 7GB for Ultra HD streaming. The lower the quality, the less data is consumed. Remember to save your settings.

Want to avoid these steps? Your other option is to .

Use Audio Description for narration

A lesser-known feature on Netflix is the  function, which can be beneficial for visually impaired viewers. When you activate it, a voice-over gives a description of what’s happening onscreen during a show or movie. A voice describes the facial expressions, clothing, scenery, physical movements and other elements as they happen.

Netflix says most of its originals have Audio Description available, and it works for some other titles on the platform too. To turn it on, begin playing a video on your device. Mobile device or computer users can tap their screens, while smart TVs, Apple TV or gaming consoles will need to use the remote control.

Select the Dialog icon box to see which languages Audio Description is available for and choose your option.

Change the look of your subtitles

Enjoying the latest foreign title streaming on Netflix? Dubs are cool, but some viewers prefer to watch certain content like  and anime in their original language with subtitles. You can adjust the subtitle settings for font type, size, text shadowing or background.

You’ll need to open Netflix in a web browser and select a profile from the account page. Click on Subtitle Appearance to change the settings and then click Save. This can be done for each profile on your Netflix account. You may have to reload the app on your TV for the changes to take effect. If you don’t like the new setup, simply choose “Reset to default” to restore the previous subtitle settings.

Lock down your profile

Do you share your Netflix account with someone who occasionally watches stuff on your profile? Maybe your tween likes to sneak-watch Riverdale or another show that’s meant for mature audiences. If you want to prevent others on your account from messing up your recommendation flow, pop a pin on your profile. Head to your account page from a web browser and scroll to the Profile & Parental Controls settings. Click change on Profile Lock, and enter your account password when prompted. Check the box where it says, “Require a PIN to access XYZ’s profile.” Enter a four-digit PIN.

You’ll have to type it in each time you open the app and click on your profile, but you’ll be the only one privy to this information.

Check your bit rate stats

Wondering what the streaming quality is for your favorite show? Check the bit rate with Netflix’s “Stats for nerds” menu. A higher bit rate equals higher video quality. With your video open, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + D on your laptop keyboard to check out your bit rate speed, buffering state and frame rate. On this screen, HD viewers can confirm speed and resolution.

Some smart TV models are capable of pulling up these stats too, but you’ll need a remote control with an Info button. Click it as your Netflix video plays to check the nerd stats. For Roku users, choose a show or film and before pressing play, hit the asterisk * button twice to see the numbers. Click it twice again to disable the view.

You’ll want to pause your video so you can capture the code information without missing any scenes from your favorite show. The other catch? You can’t edit any of those stats if you’re in the mood for a debugging session.

Bit rate information isn’t only interesting for the technically minded, it can help when you’re facing . For example, it can guide you where to move your router or streaming device to improve your Wi-Fi signal.

Really love a show? Give it two thumbs up

This April, Netflix launched a new feature: . As part of its recommendation system, this signifies your passion for a title and helps Netflix hone in on what you really like to watch. Though the standard thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons allow you to give a basic rating to a show or film, clicking two thumbs prompts feedback that reads, “We know you’re a true fan!”

You can use this option while watching Netflix on your TV, web browser or mobile device. The streamer notes that if you tap Two Thumbs Up to express your love for a specific TV series or movie, the system will drill down and recommend more titles related to the cast members, production teams, character types or niche genres affiliated with your pick.

Set up notifications for shows and movies

While Netflix may already email you about what’s coming soon or newly added movies that “you might like,” you can take matters into your own hands by activating alerts within the app. Set up reminders for titles that are arriving in the near future. For example, The Sandman debuts on Aug. 5. Rather than rely on memory or Google for the information, you can navigate to the and click Remind Me to receive a notification from Netflix when it drops. It will also be automatically added to My List once it’s available to stream.

You can also enable push notifications on your phone or tablet for the app. Netflix will alert you with recommendations and new TV show or movie releases.

16:59

FULL TIME: Blackpool 1-0 Reading

Callum Connolly scores early to earn Blackpool a 1-0 victory over Reading.

16:58

GOAL Hull 2-1 Bristol City (Seri, 90+4)

Hull complete their turnaround as former Fulham player Jean Michael Seri scores on his debut in added time to hand Hul victory on the opening weekend of the season. His powerful strike from range takes a deflection and wrong-foots the keeper to put Hull in front for the first time in the match.

16:56

Luton and Birmingham play out a goalless draw as neither team finds enough to take three points.

16:55

Lewis Travis scores the game’s only goal with his first-half rocket sealing three points for Blackburn.

16:53

Full time scores start to come in

16:48

RED CARD: Cardiff 1-0 Norwich

This game has already had one red card and now we’ve got another as Norwich City captain Grant Hanley is shown a second yellow card.

He mistimes his attempted challenge on Mark Harris as both team’s are now down to 10 men. Norwich boss Dean Smith is fuming and rightly so.

16:45

RED CARD: Wigan 0-0 Preston

Ched Evans has been on the pitch just a matter of minutes after coming on but finds himself back off the pitch as he is shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Curtis Tilt. Some questioning the intent with Evans originally appearing to slip but the referee has given him his marching orders.

16:43

Cardiff 1-0 Norwich

Worrying scenes for Norwich fans as their star striker Teemu Pukki has left the pitch clutching his calf as the visitors go in search of an equaliser against 10-men Cardiff. The hosts may be a man down but still look largely in control.

16:36

GOAL Hull 1-1 Bristoi City (Tufan, 72 pen)

Hull have pulled themselves level from the penalty spot through new signing Ozan Tufan. There looked to be very little contact in the penalty box but Hull fans won’t care as they equalise against the run of play.

16:34

RED CARD: Cardiff 1-0 Norwich

Tempers are flaring down in Wales as Cardiff are reduced to 10-men with Perry Ng sent for an early bath, just the third red card of his career! He was shown a second yellow card for a rash challenge and has left his side with an incredibly difficult task to hold out against Norwich.

16:26

GOAL Millwall 2-0 Stoke (Cresswell, 65)

And of course as soon as I write that we have another goal!

It’s that man Charlie Cresswell again who is enjoying a debut to remember as he doubles Millwall’s lead with another headed goal to give the Lions breathing space.

16:23

Slow burners across the Championship

That first half flurry of goals seems to have momentarily petered out with Cardiff scoring the only second half goal of the afternoon. Wigan v Preston and Luton v Birmingham are the only goalless games in this opening weekend of Championship fixtures.

Swansea’s match against Rotherham is also the only match with more than one goal in it so far (1-1).

16:14

DISALLOWED: Millwall 1-0 Stoke

Millwall have the ball in the back of the net but Tom Bradshaw has his brilliantly taken finish chalked off as the linesman raises his flag for offside.

16:11

GOAL Cardiff 1-0 Norwich (Sawyers, 49)

We hoped for more goals and have got exactly that as Cardiff take an early second-half lead against Norwich through Romaine Sawyers who has scored on his debut with a shot from 25 yards out.

Today is quickly turning into the opening weekend of long-range strikes with plenty of thunderous goals going in around the grounds. Norwich need to improve on that lackluster first half if they are to get back into this one.

16:08

Back underway in the Championship

We’re back underway across this afternoon’s eight Championship fixtures! Here’s hoping for some more goals!

16:07

Half time round-up

It has been a relatively tentative start to the Championship’s opening weekend with just six goals across the eight games, but there have been some stunning strikes and very early contenders for goal of the season.

Callum Connolly opened the weekend scoring to put Blackpool in front against Reading.

Debutant Charlie Cresswell marked his first appearance in a Millwall shirt with a brilliant header after just 12 minutes to give Millwall a 1-0 lead over Stoke.

Chieo Ogbene opened the scoring for Rotherham against Swansea before the visitors pulled themselves level as defender Harry Darling struck a 30-yard thunderbolt.

The ever-reliable Andreas Weimann made no mistake from close-range to put Bristol City in front against Hull.

Blackburn took the lead in their clash against QPR just ten minutes before half time as Lewis Travis struck from long-range.

15:52

HALF TIME: Wigan 0-0 Preston

15:52

HALF TIME: Hull 0-1 Bristol City

15:51

HALF TIME: Blackpool 1-0 Reading

15:51

HALF TIME: Rotherham 1-1 Swansea

15:50

HALF TIME: Luton 0-0 Birmingham

15:49

HALF TIME: Millwall 1-0 Stoke

15:48

HALF TIME: Cardiff 0-0 Norwich

15:48

HALF TIME: Blackburn 1-0 QPR

15:43

GOAL Rotherham 1-1 Swansea (Darling, 38)

It’s all square in this one as Swansea centre-back Harry Darling stuns everyone inside the ground with a sensational shot from 30-yards out to pull his side level. I’m sure the Swansea strikers will be taking note as the debutant defender demonstrates his eye for goal!

15:39

GOAL Blackburn 1-0 QPR (Travis, 34)

The goals are now flying in and we couldn’t be happier! It may be the first weekend of the season but Blackburn already have a contender for goal of the season.

QPR attempt to clear their lines but Ryan Hedges waits on the edge of the box as he controls the ball for Lewis Travis who hits a first-time rocket strike from 25 yards out to open the scoring. Ewood Park erupts and rightly so!

15:35

GOAL Hull 0- Bristol City (Weimann, 30)

Bristol City players may have arrived at the game in taxis after issues with their team coach but that hasn’t disrupted them in the slightest as Andreas Weimann makes no mistake from close-range after Zak Vyner’s free-kick was fired into the box.

15:31

Cardiff 0-0 Norwich

Cardiff have dominated the opening exchanges in this Championship encounter but Norwich are starting to grow into the game as they beging to get players forward. Dean Smith has endured a mixed pre-season as he looks to take Norwich back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

15:28

OFF THE BAR: Blackburn 0-0 QPR

There has been little to write home about at Ewood Park but Osman Kakay almost changed that with his 25-yeard strike rattling the crossbar.

15:25

GOAL Rotherham 1-0 Swansea (Ogbene, 16)

Rotherham have lift off on their return to the Champiobship as Chieo Ogbene’s header opens the scoring for Paul Warne’s side against Swansea.

15:23

Millwall 1-0 Stoke

Cresswell’s opening goal was the first competitive goal of his Millwall career after he joined on a season-long loan deal from Leeds. I’m sure the 19-year-old defender perhaps wasn’t expecting to score the first goal of the opening weekend.

15:14

GOAL Millwall 1-0 Stoke

The Championship floodgates have opened and we have another goal as Millwall take the lead against Stoke. Charlie Cresswell met George Honeyman’s corner delivery to put the home side in front with a bullet header!

15:12

GOAL Blackpool 1-0 Reading 0 (Connoly, 9)

We have our first goal of the Championship weekend with Blackpool breaking down the dorrs of Reading’s defence. Callum Connolly reacted quickest in the box to react to Josh Bowler’s parried shot.

15:09

Blackburn 0-0 QPR

Both side’s momentarily looked to mount playoff charges last season but fell just short and will be hoping to go one better this season. It has been a relatively quiet start at Ewood Park so far with the hosts looking to create width through their full-backs.

15:06

Cardiff 0-0 Norwich

Norwich boss Dean Smith will be hoping he can get his side firing on all cylinders after being relegated from the Premier League last season having lost 67% of his league games.

That being said, Cardiff have started stronger in the match with the visitors struggling to get into the game.
