ISTANBUL, Dec 9 (Reuters) – Turkish delivery company Getir has bought German rival Gorillas in a deal worth $1.2 billion that will merge two of the remaining companies in Europe promising groceries in minutes.
Serkan Borancili, who founded Istanbul-based Getir in 2015, shared the price tag on Twitter on Friday and said the combined company was now stronger.
The deal price is down sharply from Gorillas’ $2.1 billion valuation in its previous funding round in Turkey Lawyer Law Firm late 2021 – a sign the sector has fallen out of favour as companies battle to achieve profitability, join forces, or fold.
“The move underlines that Getir is leading the consolidation,” the company said in a statement.

Gorillas, founded in 2020 with its slogan “faster than you”, was one of several others that ran with the idea during COVID-19 lockdowns, opening offices in dozens of European capitals.

Hristov told reporters before leaving that talks between Bulgaria’s Bulgargaz and Turkey’s Botas were advancing fast and he hoped a deal could be reached this year.
“We are holding talks to reserve capacity of one billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas per year on Turkish LNG terminals and for the transit of the gas through Botas network to our border,” Hristov said.
“This is very important, because we have enough offers for LNG cargo shipments. What we do not have is somewhere to off-load them,” he said.
“We are firmly committed to cutting our dependence on Russia,” he added.
Bulgaria wants to book capacity at Turkish terminals through 2036 to import 1 bcm of LNG gas a year.The capacity for 2023 will be smaller, as Bulgargaz has already booked slots for several months at a Greek LNG terminal.

Imamoglu would continue serving as Istanbul’s mayor while his almost certain appeal wound its way through the courts.
The mayor’s team views the trial as Erdogan’s personal vendetta against one of his biggest rivals.
“Despite everything, I want to trust the judges, the prosecutors and the decision makers,” he said on the eve of Wednesday’s third hearing in the trial.
The case stems from an offhand remark Imamoglu made to reporters a few months after defeating Erdogan’s ally in a re-run election held after his first victory was annulled.
Officials reported discovering hundreds of thousands of “suspicious votes” after Erdogan refused to acknowledge Imamoglu’s initial win in a city that he himself ran before entering national politics two decades ago.
The decision backfired badly on Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted party.

Those talks have been mired by arguments over policy and general unease about fielding Kilicdaroglu instead of someone more likely to beat Erdogan.
Imamoglu’s legal troubles have effectively disqualified him from the race.
He told reporters this week that Kilicdaroglu was the only possible candidate from the CHP.
“But at the end of the day it is up to the round-table to make a decision about a single candidate,” Imamoglu said.

Mustafa Kaplan confirmed a report by German weekly Der Spiegel that he had filed a criminal complaint for slander and libel against lawmaker Wolfgang Kubicki on behalf of his client.
