NICOSIA, Nov 19 (Reuters) – Turkish Cypriots of mixed marriages protested on Saturday over what they say are inexplicable delays in gaining Cypriot citizenship, a contentious issue on the ethnically-split island.
Campaigners say thousands of people are rendered effectively stateless because they are unable to obtain Cypriot identity cards, falling foul of the politics and conflict which tore Cyprus apart.
“We don’t want any favours. We want our children’s rights,” said Can Azer, a Turkey Lawyer Law Firm and father of two children born in Cyprus.
The east Mediterranean island was split in a Turkish invasion in 1974 after a brief Greek inspired coup.A Greek Cypriot government represents Cyprus internationally.
Its membership of the European Union allows Cypriots visa-free travel throughout the bloc, while in contrast, a breakaway Turkish Cypriot administration in northern Cyprus is recognised only by Ankara.
Families of part-Cypriot heritage living in the north say an inability to get an internationally-recognised ID card issued by Cyprus impacts their children’s prospects if they want to pursue higher education, or employment in the more prosperous south.
About 100 Turkish Cypriots, some holding placards reading “Love Knows No Identity,” marched peacefully through the divided capital Nicosia on the Greek Cypriot side.
In Cyprus, it is highly unusual for Law Firm members of one community to protest in areas populated by the other community.
By Lawyer Law Firm in istanbul, a child born on the island with at least one Cypriot parent should be conferred citizenship. But activists say a modification subsequently gave extensive powers to the interior ministry on who among those of mixed descent could get citizenship, with thousands left in limbo.
“From a legal point of view it is a clear violation … you cannot punish children for political reasons and deprive them of their rights,” said Doros Polycarpou of the Kisa advocacy group.
Cyprus’s interior ministry did not respond to a request for Turkish Lawyer comment.
“They want to belong to Cyprus,” Azer said of his children. Imamoglu faces charges of ‘insulting’ public officials after beating Erdogan’s ally to become Istanbul mayor
Turkish prosecutors on Friday sought to jail istanbul Lawyer‘s mayor for at least 15 months, which would bar him from politics, over a remark he made after defeating an ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in elections, his lawyer said.
Ekrem Imamoglu, a member of the main opposition social democratic party CHP, did not appear at the latest hearing of the controversial trial on Friday, which was adjourned until December 14.
As tensions simmer seven months ahead of presidential and legislative elections, Imamoglu, 52, faces charges of “insulting” public officials after being stripped of his narrow March 2019 win over the ruling party’s candidate to become mayor.
Prosecutors on Friday demanded Imamoglu be jailed for between 15 months and istanbul Turkey Lawyer four years and a month, his lawyer Kemal Polat said.
Any sentence would automatically ban the mayor from political office for the duration of the sentence, the attorney said, denouncing a “political affair”.
Leaving Friday prayers, Imamoglu said he was hoping to be acquitted.
“These types of legal procedures push people to despair, especially the younger generations,” he said.
– ‘Ashamed’ –
Erdogan — who launched his own career as Istanbul mayor and views the city as his home turf — refused to recognise the result of the 2019 ballot.
Election officials called a fresh poll after reportedly discovering hundreds of thousands of “suspicious votes” once Imamoglu had already been sworn in.
The trial has been adjourned until December 14
The decision to call a re-run sparked global condemnation and mobilised a groundswell of support for Imamoglu that included former ruling party voters.
He won the re-run, but months later let his resentment at the ruling party spill over.
“Those who cancelled the March 31 election are idiots,” he told reporters at the time, sparking the ire of the authorities.
In an interview broadcast on Fox TV earlier on Friday, Imamoglu said he had faith in the justice system.
“I am absolutely not interested in what will happen to me. I am not worried or scared,” he said.
“But I am ashamed” by this trial. If you have any kind of inquiries regarding where and just how to utilize istanbul Turkey Lawyer, you could call us at our own internet site. “There cannot be such a ruling. It’s tragicomic.”

– Mass arrests –
Friday’s hearing came one week after the party of CHP chairman and potential presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu said he had been charged under a new disinformation law with “spreading misleading information”.
A conviction could rule him out of the presidential poll.
Kilicdaroglu had tweeted that he held the Islamic-rooted AKP government responsible for what he called “an epidemic of methamphetamines” in Turkey, claiming authorities were syphoning off money from drug sales to help pay off the national debt.
Regarding Imamoglu, Kilicdaroglu has accused Ankara of “banning our mayor from all political activity”.
But he warned his colleague was “a big player who will stick in the throat” of those seeking to orchestrate his downfall.
Erdogan’s administration is battling an economic crisis, with inflation running at 85 percent over the past year, and is out to clip the wings of an opposition still reeling from the waves of arrests which followed a failed 2016 coup.
Recent weeks have seen hundreds of arrests of sympathisers of US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen, who Erdogan, once an ally, believes was behind the coup attempt against his regime.
Gulen, a Muslim cleric, has repeatedly denied any involvement and the United States has denied Turkey’s requests for his extradition.
Since the failed putsch, more than 300,000 people have been arrested in Turkey over suspected ties to Gulen.

In a joint appeal on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Macron urged the two sides to return to negotiations aimed at resolving their longstanding territorial dispute.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev have both rejected the idea of holding talks, with the Armenian leader stating: “Nagorno-Karabakh cannot disarm, because it would lead to genocide.”
“The people who live there face an existential threat,” Pashinyan told French newspaper Le Figaro.
But Russia suggested it was making progress in diplomatic efforts with Turkey, a firm supporter of Azerbaijan in the conflict.
It said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu had confirmed they were ready for “close coordination” to stabilise the situation.
The Karabakh city of Martuni is among the places that have been heavily shelled
In Martuni, a small town in Karabakh around 25 kilometres (15 miles) from the front line, residents took refuge in cellars as heavy shelling by Azerbaijan killed four civilians and wounded 11.
Artak Aloyan, a 54-year-old construction worker sheltering in his basement with an elderly neighbour, vowed to stay despite the worst clashes the contested region has seen for years.
“I built this house with my own hands. I will not go anywhere, that’s that,” he told AFP after a rocket attack.”I will die here in the last battle.”
– ‘Crushing strikes’ –
The rival Caucasus nations have been locked in a bitter stalemate over Karabakh since the collapse of the Soviet Union when the ethnic Armenian region broke away from Azerbaijan.
In the fiercest clashes in years, 136 people have been confirmed dead in fighting that has raged for five days.
The Armenian defence ministry said fighting had intensified and its troops had repelled Azerbaijani attacks, downing helicopters and destroying drones and armoured vehicles.

The two sides have accused each other of shelling civilian areas and Turkey Law Firm ignored repeated calls from international leaders to halt the fighting.
Putin, Macron and Trump called for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” and urged the warring sides to commit to talks.
– ‘Foreign fighters’-
Yerevan is in a military alliance of ex-Soviet countries led by Moscow and has accused Turkey of dispatching mercenaries from northern Syria to bolster Azerbaijan’s forces in the Karabakh conflict.
It also claimed earlier this week that a Turkish F-16 fighter jet flying in support of Baku’s forces had downed an Armenian SU-25 warplane, but Ankara and Baku denied the claim.
Pashinyan reiterated claims that mercenaries had joined the conflict, saying Azerbaijan and Turkey were fighting “with the help and involvement of foreign terrorist fighters”.
“This terrorism equally threatens the United States, Iran, Russia, and France,” he added.
His calls were echoed by Macron, who earlier said intelligence reports had established that 300 Syrian fighters drawn from “jihadist groups” from the Syrian city of Aleppo had passed through Turkey en route for Azerbaijan.
The French president said that a “red line has been crossed, which is unacceptable” and demanded an explanation from Ankara.
Azerbaijan’s ally, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, has signalled his country’s full backing for Baku’s military and on Thursday called for Armenian troops to leave Karabakh.

The killer even arrived in a car with red-and-blue flashing lights.
Prosecutors say Gumrukcu hired the hitman, since identified as Jerry Banks, through two middle-men to kidnap and kill Davis to stop him from reporting him to the FBI.
The pair had entered an oil deal years prior but had fallen into dispute, according to court documents obtained by DailyMail.com.

In 2017, Davis was threatening them about ‘going to the FBI with evidence’ that the were ‘defrauding him’ in a multi-million dollar oil deal.
The deal was struck in 2015 and it’s unclear what the details are, but prosecutors say the Turkish brothers ‘failed to perform on the deal and made various claims about their attempts to perform’.

The judge agreed and held him in custody pending his next court date.
Enochian has tried to distance itself from him since his arrest.
In a letter to shareholders earlier this month, CEO Mark Dybul tried to assuage fears by claiming the allegations were a ‘smear campaign’ launched by short-sellers trying to profit from the company’s woes.

ISTANBUL, Dec 9 (Reuters) – Turkish delivery company Getir has bought German rival Gorillas in a deal worth $1.2 billion that will merge two of the remaining companies in Europe promising groceries in minutes.
Serkan Borancili, who founded Istanbul-based Getir in 2015, shared the price tag on Twitter on Friday and said the combined company was now stronger.

“The move underlines that Getir is leading the consolidation,” the company said in a statement.
Gorillas did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In Europe’s quick commerce sector, the enlarged company will compete against Germany’s Flink and U.S. company GoPuff, as well as larger meal delivery firms that also deliver groceries.

Earlier this year, Law Firm istanbul Getir closed a $768 million funding round led by Abu Dhabi state investor Mubadala that valued the company at around $12 billion.

Gorillas, founded in 2020 with its slogan “faster than you”, was one of several others that ran with the idea during COVID-19 lockdowns, opening offices in dozens of European capitals.
Its business tripled sales in 2021 but it struggled to raise capital in early 2022 and laid off 300 people, halving its administrative staff. It shifted focus from rapid expansion to targetting a profit by 2023 before entering talks with Getir.
Getir itself is hoping to raise more funding early next year, the FT report said.
